Why Pinched nerves are so dangerous
Some things can wait. This is not one of them
Hey all
From here at Jason Roets Physiotherapy, we would like to wish you all a Merry Christmas and Happy New year.
I have a good feeling 2021 is going to be the best year you had so far. I just know it. Just make sure you put in the work to make it happen.
This week I want to talk about pinched nerves. Whether they be in the neck or back.
Pinched nerves can happen in three places. In the spinal cord, as the nerves exit the spine or along the path the nerve travels down your leg or arm.
There are many things that cause pinched nerves but they in two categories. Something presses on the nerve or closes around it.
The way a nerve works is more like a hose pipe. When it is open the signals can easily travel through it. When it is compressed it cuts off the signals. When that happens, your body does not get the signals and that causes it not to work well. Pinched nerves also hurt. A LOT.
My view of them is that they are extremely dangerous when left alone. Waiting to see if they will get better only makes them worse and more dangerous. These are the three reasons why.
1. They go quiet
That may sound like a good thing, but it really is not. Quiet does not mean they have healed and all better. What is going on is that the nerve is being compressed is not sending signals that there is a problem. When that happens, you do not feel any problems. If you do not feel a problem, you might feel that there is not any. You are wrong. How many times has your pinched nerve come back out of nowhere??
2. They get progressively worse, not better, over time.
Here you thought that the pinched nerve you “had” has gone away because you no longer feel the pain anymore. It has not. What is happening is that it is just quietly getting worse. Then out of nowhere, it starts again. This time the pain and how much it disables you is much worse than the last time.
As it gets worse it changes from being a come and go annoyance to constant crippling pain that nothing you do helps. NOTHING. Pills, hot water bottle, your Spouse cuddles and massages do not help.
When you have reached that point it just down the hill from there. Instead of walking down slowly getting worse too falling off a cliff bad.
3. They reach a point of no return.
Sorry to scare you but yes. A pinched nerve can get so bad that it cannot be fixed 100%.
That is because the pinched nerve caused problems which have caused even more problems.
What started off as one thing has become so many that for someone inexperienced it will be impossible to know where to start.
What is worse the pain has made you depressed. You fight all the time with your spouse. The kids do not want to spend time with you because of the many times you have snapped at them because of the pain.
Now you do not just have a pain problem, you have mental health problems, marriage problems and your kids hate you.
How can we fix things then?
That is why you must not wait to get pinched nerves addressed. The longer you wait the worse the problem becomes. Then it becomes exceedingly difficult to fix.
Do not wait any longer.
