We often get asked whether high blood pressure is a cause of headaches.
So, we wrote this to educate and explain how unlikely it is that your high blood pressure is causing your headache.
In very rare instances, when the blood pressure is extremely high (180/120) it can lead to severe headaches, dizziness and nose bleeds which is then is a medical emergency.
Fortunately, this is not the case for most people.
We found an article that analyses multiple studies looking into the link between headaches and blood pressure.
It’s titled’ Headaches and the Treatment of Blood Pressure: Results from a Meta-Analysis of 94 Randomized Placebo-Controlled Trials With 24 000 Participants
The found that an only1 in 30 peoplehad their headaches prevented by taking blood pressure medication
When comparing groups of people who took a placebo (fake medication) to those who took blood pressure medication they found, only8%of the group who took the medication felt better, which is 4% less than the group who took the placebo at 12%.
They still don’t know whether for the 8% who had relief is because of a drop in blood pressure or another effect of the medication has on the body
