The Eye Pain and Headache Connection: When One Problem Creates Two Kinds of Pain

A common belief is that pain felt in or behind the eye must be caused by a problem within the eye itself. When dealing with pain, it’s natural to focus on where the pain is felt rather than where the problem is coming from.

We found a study titled “The Most Common Causes of Eye Pain at Two Tertiary Ophthalmology and Neurology Clinics” examined 200 patients to determine the most common causes of eye-related pain.

The researchers found that 50% of patients seen by neurologists had eye pain related to headaches.

Because the pain is felt in the eye and head, many people understandably assume the source must be within the eye. As a result, they often consult multiple specialists and optometrists in search of an answer. When nothing is found, this can lead to frustration.

The good news is that, in many cases, eye and head pain are caused by tension-type headaches, which commonly originate from the neck, shoulders, and jaw and not the eye itself.
