Pain: Why pain killers do not cure pain.
This a common misconception many people have about pain killers. That they can cure the pain you feel if you just take them as instructed. If you have had pain for a long time you probably realize that’s not the case.
“If I take this as instructed it will cure my pain. “ The clients often tell me.Pain killers do not work that way. Let me tell you about how they work and what they are designed to do.
First, pain killers work by blocking pain signals from the body so they do not reach the brain so that you cannot interpret those signals as pain. When those signals reach the brain, that is when you feel pain.
They do so in mainly two ways. Block the signals in the area where you have been hurt or block the signals from getting through to the brain at in the brain itself or at the spinal cord.
As you can now tell by now, if your body keeps sending those signals to the brain, the pain killers will only work as long as they are in your system to block those signals. The second your body removes the medication from your system then you will be in pain again. The pain killers do not address the cause of the pain. Only limit what you consciously experience.
Next, the role of the pain killers. The role since the beginning was always to make you, the person in pain, feel more comfortable while they were recovering from an injury or surgery.
They were onlysupposed to be taken for a few weeks while the body recoversand heals to a level where the pain is expected to be minimal and you can carry on with your life. It was never supposed to be used long term. This is because the long term use of those pills causes a lot of problems additional problems.
Those problems can be from the side effects of the pain killers or worst-case scenario you can become addicted to them. You might even feel that you cannot get through the day without taking them. This is especially true of pain medication containing opioids.
Those side effects can be liver damage, stomach ulcers and intestinal problems. I must repeat that again that the most dangerous side effect of many opioids containing pain killers is that you can become physically and emotionally dependent on them. You may feel that without taking them, your pain will be too much to bear.
This leads to my next biggest concern for you. In some cases, the pain killers you are taking can make your pain feel much worse when taken for a long time. A condition called opioid-induced hyperalgesia
