Injections for Jaw and Face Pain: Temporary Relief and Lasting Disappointment?
A common belief among people suffering from jaw and facial pain is that injections offer a stronger, more effective solution when tablets care fail.
However, research suggests otherwise.
A study titled “Hyaluronate for Temporomandibular Joint Disorders” examined the effectiveness of hyaluronic acid injections compared with corticosteroid injections for headache and jaw-related pain.
The researchers found that both treatments reduced pain intensity by only 30–40%, and the relief was short-lived.
While corticosteroid injections provide temporary improvement, they are associated with significant side effects when used repeatedly or over long periods, making them unsuitable as a long-term pain management strategy.
Hyaluronic acid injections tend to have milder side effects, but they share the same problem they do not give lasting relief, from 2 weeks to 6 months at most.
Injections may reduce symptoms for a short time, but they do not address the underlying cause of the pain. Without targeting the root cause, long-term improvement is unlikely.
