Headaches and Heart attacks: What is the association?

January 17, 20231 min read

Hello

This week I want to talk about something that I discovered about the association between headaches, type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease.

Cardiovascular disease causes heart attacks and strokes.

In this week’s study they looked at how likely it will be for you to have cardiovascular disease if you also have headaches.

Let’s have a look at what the study found.

The study is called “Associations between migraine and major cardiovascular events in type 2 diabetes mellitus”

“A total of 2,229,598 people from the nationwide Korean National Health Insurance Service database with type 2 diabetes but without a previous history of MI and IS were included in this study.”

The study found that “Migraine was present in 6.3% of the study population.”

And that “The diagnosis of migraine was significantly associated with an increased risk of MI, IS, and CVD. The results remained significant after adjusting for covariates, including age, sex, body mass index, alcohol intake, smoking habits, physical activity, economic status, hypertension history, dyslipidemia, and duration of type 2 diabetes.”

MI is heart attacks. IS refers to a stroke and CVD is cardiovascular disease.

“The difference became more prominent with progressing age.”

This is a terrifying thought.

Don’t you think removing one problem will make fixing the others easier?
