Have Jaw Pain? A New Study Suggests It Might Not Be Your Joint Wearing Out

A common misconception is that jaw pain is caused purely by “wear and tear” of the jaw joint.

New research suggests this is often not the case.

We reviewed an important study titled “Temporomandibular Joint Disorders’ Impact on Pain, Function, and Disability,” which explored the relationship between joint damage and jaw pain. The researchers found no meaningful link between the amount of joint wear-and-tear and the level of pain or loss of function people experienced.

This means that treatments aimed solely at the joint itself such as injections or surgery may do very little to help fix your pain.

So where is the real problem?

In many cases, it lies in the muscles.

At The Pain Centre, we understand how dysfunction in the jaw muscles can create pain, tension, limited movement, with or without visible joint damage, and how treating these muscles can lead to real, lasting relief.
