ACL surgery: will you go back to normal?
Hello
Anterior cruciate ligament starts and their surgical repair are very common in sports people.
For them, being able to go back to playing sport is very important.
I wanted to see, if they had the surgery, how likely would it be that they could go back?
Let us look at the evidence
The name of the study is “Return to sport matters—longer-term quality of life after ACL reconstruction in people with knee difficulties.”
The first thing they say is “Many individuals experience long-term quality of life (QOL) impairment following anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction (ACLR).”
This is what they did. “Participants with knee difficulties 5–20 years following ACLR completed a battery of validated patient-reported outcomes.”
“One hundred sixty-two participants aged 38 ± 9 (mean ± SD) years completed questionnaires 9 ± 4 (range 5–20) years following ACLR.”
They found that “Thirty-nine percent of participants returned to competitive sport, 28% returned to a lower level, and 32% did not return to sport after ACLR.”
What do you think? Is that a good result?
Sounds like a terrible outcome that only 30% return to competitive sport after this knee surgery. Do you still think you want this? OR do you want to try something else.
